Old world gem
Joo Chiat; where rows of Peranakan shophouses dating back to the 1920s line the street. The true flavour of the distinct architecture has been well preserved, painting the street with a tint of of the old world charm.

An old world gem at the eastern part of Singapore...
"Joo Chiat was named after Chew Joo Chiat, who bought over the land in the beginning of the 20th century. It was initially meant for spice plantation, where items such as nutmeg, gambier, and pepper were in great demand by the europeans then."
As the town becomes more mature, housing estates were slowly developed, and the area became more than a mere plantation and trading ground. Because of its close proximity to Tanjong Katong, many referred to Joo Chiat as plainly - "Katong".
Chew Joo Chiat was therefore known as the "King of Katong" then.

The pastel beauty of the shophouses complimented our blush and nude embellished outfit, which refined Yu Lan's frame graciously. Wayne dons on our Egyptian blue jacket with light trim, styled with classic black and white combination to give a twist to the traditional men's wear.
Chasing nostalgia
Other than the Peranakan cuisines and various signature eateries available, Joo Chiat today houses a couple of art galleries, as most owners were intrigued by the historical value of this place. Other than the newly furnished galleries, it is also not difficult to spot sight of some traditional craftsmen's works along the street.
"Some of us may remember some rattan chairs that leave marks on our fleshy toddler self, where we were "forced" to sit in during meal times..."

In operation since 1945, Teong Theng Co. is on such company that specialise in making rattan furniture. It's difficult to miss the stacks of rattan furniture in the store along the street of Joo Chiat, artfully breathing a sense of old school charm into the neighbourhood.
