MAJULAH SINGAPURA: Our Golden Jubilee

This weekend brings the whole SG50 celebration to a highlight as we come together for our nation's golden jubilee!

For that, we are honoured to have our home grown celebrity, TAY KEWEI, fronting our August post with a shoot held at Padang, amidst the magnificent backdrop of our new National Gallery.

The National Gallery will create a beautiful backdrop for this year's NDP at Padang , a historical site where many significant events of Singapore took place over the past 50 years, including the first National Day Parade in 1966. Here's Kewei looking stunning in AMANDA LEE's customized red chiffon evening gown, as she shares with us her thoughts on the new life brought upon the old Supreme court.

Hi Kewei, the new National Gallery is due to open end of this year, what are your thoughts on this building changing from the Supreme Court to National Gallery?

Kewei:  I'm very glad they chose to retain the facade, because it is such a beautiful and iconic landmark for Singapore! Am definitely looking forward to visit the National Gallery soon!

Being an artist yourself, what do you think about the Art and entertainment industry in Singapore?

Kewei: A lot of people say locals don't support local artistes, local music, etc, but I have never agreed with this. I think local or not, as long as you do your best and if your work deserves attention, your time  will come. I have been constantly learning, trying new things, and my career has been a fascinating one - I treat each opportunity as a means of improving myself, and I thoroughly enjoy what I am doing, and am thankful that I can continue to live my dream.

If there were any songs suitable for the opening of National Gallery, what would it be?

Kewei: I wrote "Victorious" 利再耀 with a clear vision in mind - that I would singing it for an international countdown event, where I will be the main act and fireworks will explode above my head as I sing this song!  I also play the erhu for this song, so I think it is a perfect celebratory song for the occasion!

Along with other local artists, Kewei will be singing for this year's SG50 theme song: "These are the days", the winning entry from SG50: The Gift of Song, a songwriting competition organized by MediaCorp to celebrate our nation's golden jubilee.

Music and lyrics are written by Lee Chin Sin, featuring MediaCorp's talent show winners Farisha Ishak, Shabir, Sufie Rashid and Alfred Sim as well as actress Julie Tan, singer Tay Kewei, instrumental band The Lorong Boys and the Singapore Symphony Children’s Choir.

This year's chosen theme for NDP 2015 is “Majulah Singapura“.

Taken from our national anthem, Majulah Singapura (Onward Singapore!), the theme calls on Singaporeans to reflect on what we have achieved over the last 50 years and anticipate our bright future together as one Singapore (NDP 2015).
