A Day of Celebration

This week, we celebrate Hari Raya Puasa, meaning a “Day of Celebration” with a series of photos featuring blogger Sheila Tham (sheilamandy.com) and her fiancé, J, shot at Kampong Glam, home to the native Malay and Muslim community in Singapore.

Heart of Kampong Glam - Masjid Sultan

On this day, our Muslim friends celebrate the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. New clothes, food spreads and decorated houses are among the many sights of this joyful occasion.

Tucked in the streets of Kampong Glam is Haji Lane, known for its energetic street art & unique Peranakan architecture. Once a street of pre-war shophouses, the atmospheric little lane has evolved into a trendy alley bustling with upcoming local designers and entrepreneurs.

DID YOU KNOW: Back in the 1960s and 1970s, Haji Lane provided lodging for many pilgrims waiting to depart or return from the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, otherwise known as the “hajj”, hence the name of the lane.

These days, you will find quaint boutiques, quirky cafes and vintage record shops in this artistic hub, now frequently visited by the hipster crowds of young Singaporeans and visitors alike.

DID YOU KNOW: Sheila is also the founder of an established homegrown fashion retailer, Hollyhoque, which has a flagship store at Orchard Gateway.

The traditional architecture of Haji lane combined with its dynamic street art presents a wonderful fusion of heritage and modernity in multi-cultural Singapore today.

Although small, there is something special in every corner of this little red dot – a unique blend of cultures worth remembering, sharing and celebrating.

So here’s wishing a joyous Hari Raya to all! Selemat Hari Raya!
