Ignite the fire

This month we celebrate the holding of South East Asia (SEA) Games in our homeland, and we are honoured to front our local talents Alfred & Kewei as part of  this celebration! A shoot was held at Kallang Stadium (next to the new National Stadium) sometime in April, a home ground which saw through the strenuous trainings of many national athletes. Alfred, dressed in a punch pink jacket designed by AMANDA LEE demonstrated his athlete moves at his familiar ground.

Other than the Project Superstar winner (and now representing Singapore in Voice of China competition *Yeah you go Alfred!!*, do you know that Alfred represented Singapore in the SEA games previously? In this short entry, get to know more about this man, with great enthusiasm and passion in the double "S"- Sports & Songs.

Hi Alfred! You represented Singapore in the SEA games in 2005 and 2007, what segment were you representing? How was the experience?

A: I represented Singapore in the sprints relay, 4 x 100m. I started Athletics in year 2000, and have been training seriously ever since. With the encouragement given by my personal coach then, I tried to keep in shape even when I was in the army. I would say that the journey wasn't easy. There's a lot of hardship, determination, perseverance and most importantly, the trust between me and the coach.  Nothing comes easy, and we did clear a few hurdles before donning the national flag on my chest.

What do you think about the local sports scene today?

A: I am currently a committee member contributing to the Singapore Athletics training and selection committee. I must say that the situation now is much better as we see improvement in the support given to the current National athletes. The building of the Sports Hub also gave us more hope and recognition for the Singapore sports scene. Everyone played their part to help raise the awareness of Sports in Singapore, from the heartland community level to schools and ultimately the pathway to elite sportsmen in Singapore.

Being a coach and a singer, what are the challenges you face?

A: I am very lucky to be able to make my passion my career. It is never easy to handle both at the same time, so time management is really important. In 2006-2008, I was working part - time with the Athletics Association to get some monetary support, also coaching a group of students from Millennia institute, studying as a part time sports science undergrad, and training hard to make it to the national team, and also singing for wedding functions. Those where the days where I learnt the most in all aspects.

This range of shoot was done at the Kallang Stadium, one of the training ground for our local athletes, any fond memories of this place?

A: Kallang Practice track was recently renovated and was given to us as the Home of Athletics. Long time ago, our national athletes used to train at Farrer Park, and those were the days when Singapore was doing very well in SEA region. We always wanted to get the training atmosphere where coaches will gather and socialize, national athletes can train and sometimes spar with each other. And now, this is a place we can proudly call our own. Sadly, I didnt have the chance to train in this stadium during my active days!

The Punch pink jacket is something that I would buy off the shelf! I was surprised that my tanned skintone actually fits nicely in the pink suit!
